Film Wedding Photography in Italy and Spain

Film photographs weddings in such an emotional way. It captures atmosphere instead of just moments.

There is just something about film photography that makes people feel something instantly. Maybe it is the grain, maybe the colours, maybe the way it captures light so softly and naturally, or maybe it is simply because film feels real. Like a memory you found in a little box years later.

Over the last few years film photography has become one of the most requested add ons for our weddings and honestly, I completely understand why. Every single couple says the same thing after receiving their gallery. “We are obsessed with the film photos.”

And I get it too.

There is something timeless about film wedding photography that digital simply cannot recreate in the same way. The movement, the softness, the imperfections, the feeling of being completely in the moment. It feels romantic without trying too hard. Elegant without being overly polished. Just real life, but prettier somehow.

Why Film Photography Works So Beautifully for Destination Weddings in Italy and Spain

The light on film during golden hour in Tuscany. Candlelight during a wedding dinner in Spain. The blurry movement of your friends dancing at midnight in Florence. Champagne glasses clinking together somewhere in Málaga while the sun is setting over the sea. Film somehow turns all of these little moments in to memories that already feel nostalgic.

I think that is why couples love it so much. It does not feel overly perfect. It feels alive.

A lot of our couples even end up adding extra film rolls after seeing how beautiful it looks throughout the day. It honestly becomes a bit addictive. Once you see your wedding on film you suddenly want everything captured that way.

Film Photography in Italy

The warm tones in Florence, the soft light around Lake Como, old villas in Tuscany, lemons on the Amalfi Coast, little streets in Rome, linen dresses moving in the wind, candlelit dinners under olive trees. Film makes all of it feel even dreamier.

Some places genuinely feel like they were made to be photographed on film.

One of my favourite things about being an Italy film wedding photographer is how naturally film works there. The colours are already so beautiful. You do not need to over edit anything or force anything. Film simply captures the atmosphere exactly how it felt.

Especially in Florence.

There is something about Florence weddings that feel incredibly romantic on film. The old architecture, warm evening light, little cafés, vintage details, beautiful textures everywhere. Even walking through the streets with a couple and taking a few quiet portraits feels cinematic there.

Film slows everything down in the best way possible. Couples stop worrying about posing perfectly and just enjoy being together.

Film Wedding Photography in Spain

The same goes for Spain honestly.

As a Spain film wedding photographer and Málaga wedding photographer, I feel like film works perfectly with the warmth and energy here. The light in southern Spain is unreal. Especially during summer evenings when everything starts glowing gold just before sunset.

Film captures that softness beautifully.

Whether it is a countryside finca wedding in Andalusia, a luxury wedding in Marbella, a stylish Barcelona celebration, or a beach wedding somewhere along the coast, film adds so much emotion and atmosphere to the gallery.

I especially love photographing destination weddings on film because people are already so relaxed and present. Everyone is outside enjoying dinner for hours, drinking cocktails, dancing under the stars, laughing with family, running barefoot somewhere at midnight. Those are exactly the moments film captures so beautifully.

Not stiff moments. Real ones.

What Photographs Best on Film

Honestly, almost everything. But film especially loves good light, movement, textures, and emotion.

Candles look incredible on film. Sunsets look incredible. Veils moving in the wind. Champagne towers. Vintage details. Cigars and cocktails. Long dinners outside. Black tie fashion. Soft morning light while getting ready. Flash photos during the dance floor chaos.

Film also photographs skin tones beautifully and gives everything this softness that feels very editorial but still emotional.

And the grain.

I could genuinely talk about film grain forever because it is probably my favourite part. It gives photographs texture and depth and makes moments feel nostalgic instantly. Nothing feels too sharp or overdone. It feels natural and timeless. Find more about film work here.

Why I Love Shooting Weddings on Film

For me personally, film makes me slow down in the best way. Every frame matters more. Every little moment feels intentional.

It also changes the energy around photography during the wedding day. Couples become less focused on perfection and more focused on simply enjoying everything. Some of my favourite wedding photographs ever are blurry film frames where nobody is even looking at the camera.

Those usually end up becoming the favourites.

Film feels emotional because it is emotional to shoot too. You cannot instantly check the back of the camera. You trust the moment. You capture what something felt like instead of trying to overly control it.

And honestly, that is exactly how weddings should be remembered.

A Mix of Digital and Film

Most of our couples choose a mix of digital and film photography for their wedding day and I truly think it is the perfect combination.

Digital allows us to document everything quickly and naturally while film adds that extra layer of emotion, softness, and timelessness. Together they create a gallery that feels complete.

Like memories and art mixed together. Film is never about replacing digital. It is about adding feeling to it.

Thinking About Adding Film to Your Wedding?

If you are planning a wedding in Italy, Spain, Florence, Málaga, Marbella, Barcelona, or anywhere in Europe honestly, film photography is such a beautiful addition to your wedding gallery.

Especially if you love photographs that feel timeless, relaxed, emotional, and a little nostalgic.

Every year more couples are asking for film coverage and extra film rolls and I truly do not see that changing anytime soon. Once people see how their memories look on film, they completely fall in love with it.

And honestly, so do I every single time. ❤️
